5 Reasons to be GIDDY about the Social Good Summit

Let’s face it, we’re giddy … Giddy for all the social goodness that is about to hit New York City (and around the world) next week at the Social Good Summit (September 22-24); Giddy to discuss BIG IDEAS with a dynamic group of bloggers, press, celebrities, world leaders, youth, CEO’s, non-profits and everyday citizens; And giddy to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let us break it down. Since 2010, the Social Good Summit has generated increasing attention and excitement, as a dynamic, open-to-all counterpoint to New York City’s U.N. Week and the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. And this year, something unprecedented will happen: the first-ever Global Conversation. [full post]

If You Give a Mommy a Mobile App…

[A Sneak-Peek at the United Nations Foundation’s New Baby Milestone-Capturing App] I was two years old when I was first read the story “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Or so I’ve been told. While the exact date is a little hazy, it’s a memory that I will never forget. I’d insist that the reader –mom or dad – use fun voices, of course. And a tall glass of milk, please. Maybe some paper and crayons, depending on the time of day. Now, this isn’t the most exciting memory. But I remember it well.  After all, isn’t childhood made up of a collection of memories, milestones and millions of “firsts” that we long to experience and share? From the first books read to the first temper tantrums cried, every child deserves a shot at experiencing these remarkable moments. [full post]

Clinton Global Initiative: Sounding the Social Media ‘SmokeAlarm’ for Clean Water

This past weekend, we had the privilege to attend the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, a pinnacle social good event that gathers leaders in business, government and civil society to address some of the world’s most pressing issues. Every year, one of the most amazing things to watch is the diversity of partners making commitments. From afar, it could almost appear like shear randomness. At CGI, the answer is simple: a commitment to clean water. [full post]

Letting Go of Ego to Amplify Impact (for Social Good)

One Nonprofit’s Strategy for Marking the anniversary of the UN High Level Meeting on NCDs; Guest post by Thea Joselow, Head, Social and Digital Media, Arogya World; Last week marked the one-year anniversary of the United Nations high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs (including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic respiratory illness) are the world’s number one killer, causing nearly two out of three deaths worldwide, and they’re on the rise. The amazing thing about these diseases is that – in many cases – they are preventable. Eating well, increasing physical activity, and refraining from tobacco use can save countless lives and livelihoods (if economic development is your cup of tea). [full post]

#SGSGlobal: Creating A Global Conversation to ‘Hashtag’ Out the World’s Challenges

Social Media walks into a bar with Malnutrition, Disease, Poverty, Climate Change and Education. The young, energetic Social Media (SM, for short) looks at the other five and says, “Ok, enough is enough. Let’s ‘hashtag’ this thing out.” As lighthearted and over-simplified this story may be, it’s not exactly a tall tale. Last week, the Social Good Summit and Global Conversation – an international discussion on the role of digital technology to advance social good – showed us that this Social Media character might actually play a significant role in tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues.
